After the last bike run was cancelled due to bad weather, our prayers were answered when the day dawned fine, but slightly overcast. Over 70 bikes turned up at the ENZED South Auckland Shop for our 9.00am departure. Hose Doctor Shane Thompson led the bikes away and ensured we all got onto the Southern motorway in one group. The destination was Whangamata, a distance (one way) of 140km.
First stop were the hotel and gas station at Kopu. Along the way we picked up at least another 10 bikes and after refreshments, everyone headed over the Hikuai hills to Whangamata for another break, The weather on the Coromandle was hot and sunny but before long people were keen to get the breeze flowing again and head to the lunch stop.
The group, now numbering over 100 riders and pillions, headed off to complete the loop past Whiritoa, and through Waihi before lunch at a picnic spot in the Waikino Gorge. This was the christening for our new ENZED BBQ trailer that we built for just such an occasion. Six burner barbeque, chiller for the drinks, storage and work space, it passed with flying colours thanks to our cooks Eddie and Brenda.
Everyone relaxed in the picturesque Karangahake Gorge before heading back to town. A really great day’s camaraderie and riding.
